If you want to find out more about applying to become a Labour candidate for Hackney Council then now’s your chance! There’s three workshops coming up… one for BAME members, one for women members and one that is open to all members. Attending one of these workshops is a great chance to find out what’s involved from some of our current councillors. It doesn’t commit you to applying. But if you do want to apply, you have until 28th February to submit your application. All the information and documents that you need is in the letter below from Pat Corrigan, Secretary of Hackney Labour’s Local Campaign Forum…
Letter from Pat Corrigan
The November meeting of the Local Campaign Forum (LCF) decided that the local government by-election panel should be re-opened in January. This follows from a commitment that was given by the LCF in September 2018 when the panel was opened specifically for the Victoria by-election. We are inviting applications, therefore, from party members who may wish to be considered for selection for any by-election that may occur in Hackney up to 2022. We wish in particular to receive applications from groups who are specifically under-represented both on the panel and in Labour Group e.g. from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities, from Women, and from members with Disabilities.
If you wish to apply, you are entitled to nominate yourself. You must, however, have been in continuous membership since January 2018 and your subscription to the Party must be fully paid up. Members who were previously unsuccessful in this process are also eligible to apply.
The application process
If you wish to be considered for the panel, you must do the following:
- Complete the Candidate Application Form;
- Get you branch secretary to complete the Branch Report for New Applicants Form;
- Return both forms to me by 5pm on 28th February.
You will then be invited to interview by an LCF Assessment Panel which will decide whether you are eligible to be included on the panel.
You will be able to submit your completed forms at any time between now and 5pm on Thursday 28th February. Your forms should be sent to me at email@example.com
If you are interested in applying for the panel, you may find it helpful to read the Candidates Contract, the Job Description for Councillors, and the Councillors’ Guidance and Codes of Conduct. They are available below and they set out what being a councillor involves. You should certainly read them if you are invited to interview.
The LCF recognises, however, that the application process and the expectations around the role of a councillor may seem difficult. We are providing, therefore, three workshops which will help you with the application and interview stages of the process, and will provide a deeper understanding of what a councillor is expected to do. Attendance at these workshops is entirely voluntary – you do not have to attend a workshop if you decide to submit an application – and are purely there to help you with the process should you wish it. The workshops will cover broadly the same ground and will be held as follows:
- On Sunday 27th January from 5-7pm a workshop that is open to BAME members. For more details – email firstname.lastname@example.org
- On Saturday 2nd February from 11am-1pm in the Pembury Community Centre, 1 Atkins Square, Dalston Lane, E8 1FA. This workshop is open to women members.
- On Sunday 10th February from 2-4pm in the Gooch House Tenants’ Room, Gooch House, Kenninghall Road, E5 8DG. This workshop is open to all members.
All of these are accessible venues.
If you wish to attend any of the workshops could you please complete the LCF Workshop Attendance Form, which is available below, and return it to me as soon as possible at email@example.com
Finally, I would like to make it clear that this will not be the only opportunity that you will have to apply for inclusion on the panel. The LCF is committed to have in place a panel that reflects the whole of Hackney’s diversity, and we will continue to monitor the composition of our panel and to provide continuing opportunities for panel membership. The LCF will, therefore, re-open the panel on a rolling basis over the next 3 years.
I hope that all of this is clear but if you have any queries, or if you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by email or by phone – 07984 035907.
