Join us for an evening of socialist entertainment in one of Hackney’s cutest venues, Brewer’s Bar on Shacklewell Lane. This gig is in solidarity with two local strike actions at Hackney Picturehouse and New College. We’ll be entertained by a line up that includes the poets Matt Abbott, Emily Harrison and Janine Booth and get updates from both strikes. Doors open at 7pm with the first act appearing at 8pm. Tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis via this website. All proceeds will go direct to the workers.
Picturehouse workers in Hackney and elsewhere have been on strike for nearly over a year and a half. They are asking to be paid London Living Wage, for improved working conditions and for recognition of their Trade Union Bectu. Their management have refused to negotiate with them. They are kicking off another round of action with a strike at Picturehouse Central by Piccadilly Circus on Thursday 31st May from 5.30pm at the start of the Sundance Film Festival. You can donate to their strike fund here.
New College workers in East London have been taking strike action for the past months to get increased pay as despite the principal getting a hefty pay rise, they have seen their pay fall in real terms.
